Cause billions of dollars in damage

They primarily feed on wood, but also damage paper, books, insulation, and even swimming pool liners and filtration systems.

Damage Termites can do to a Home

Termites are tiny insects that live in densely populated colonies. The average colony has more than one queen, and each queen can lay hundreds of thousands or even millions of eggs in a lifetime. In addition to reproductive termites, colonies contain two types of wingless castes that are just as important. Soldier termites guard the colony from ant invasions and other threats, and a single soldier can defend an entire tunnel with its large head and jaws. Worker termites are involved in locating, gathering, and storing food. They also have special organs that allow them to digest and distribute food to the rest of the colony. Termites feed exclusively on cellulose, a structural compound found in trees and other plants.

Damage Caused by Termites

Termites become a problem for humans when they target the wooden components of houses and other structures. The scale of the damage depends on the size of the colony as well as the species. Eastern subterranean termites are native to the U.S., and their colonies typically number in the hundreds of thousands. Formosan termite colonies, on the other hand, often grow to contain tens of millions of workers. A sizable Formosan termite colony can hollow out and destroy several pounds of structural timber in a week. This species was introduced to the U.S. from Asia, and it has now spread throughout much of the South.
